Laying the Brick Well, once I get an idea, there really is no reeling me back in. When Will and I built our house we knew we wanted to customize several things after we were already in the home. You see, while building a home from the ground up is amazing, it is COSTLY. Doing several things DIY style after the build were much more cost effective. For starters, the bathroom mirrors. We requested that all of the builder grade mirrors be attached with clips instead of glue (this would make the taking down process easier and leave no marks on the wall). We have removed 3 of the bathroom mirrors and replaced with more customized and unique mirrors for the individual spaces. While this wasn't expensive, it definitely makes for a more inviting bathroom (and who doesn't want to feel welcome in a bathroom?!?!). Back to my big ideas: I have wanted to add an eye catching feature in the master bath to give it a little pizzaz. After many late nights scouring the internet and thumbing thru design magazines I decided a brick wall would be the look. Cue Will being freaked out. After my brick wall research (one would think I am curing diseases with all of my research) I learned of an incredible product offered right down the road at Home Depot and Lowes; faux brick panels! At $25 a sheet (8'x4') this seemed to good to be true... it wasn't! Will is my cautious and thoughtful other half. He is a planner and I am a dreamer. So, before the big undertaking why not give it a whirl in a smaller space? We have a little (tiny) mudroom area right off of our garage entry and beside our laundry room. Guess what size the wall space is? 8'x4'! Only needing one small cut and some paint, we were ready to roll! Will has fallen in love with Ryobi power tools and that is a win for this DIY dreamer. He busted out his trusty jigsaw and made the small cut needed and then we painted. I thought it would be easier to paint on the ground. I HATE paint prep. HATE. Taping is a necessary evil and I chose to avoid that evil. We painted using Sherwin Williams, Highly Reflective (a white) in eggshell finish. It took about 3 coats and we were good to go! We attached the panel to the wall using a nail compressor with finishing nails and then added an easy trim to cover the edges (1"). To give the finished look, we caulked the edges. After a quick trip to Hobby Lobby for some hooks (5 hooks at $2 per hook- with the 50% off) we had an easy and affordable project done! We are so pleased with the turnout and are looking forward to tackling the master bath. Take a look at the before-during-after pics! Happy DIYing friends!
